FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

African American Wellness Project (AAWP) Partners with Alameda County to Increase Vaccination Rates Among Alameda County Residents

Focus on education, awareness and activation to reduce COVID-19 in the Community

Oakland, CA, January 20, 2022 — The African American Wellness Project (AAWP) today announced a new partnership with the Alameda Alliance for Health to increase COVID-19 vaccination rates among the Black community in Alameda County through education and information initiatives.

According to research:

  • Nearly one in four COVID-19 deaths is a Black person.
  • One-third of the patients hospitalized with COVID-19 are Black.
  • In Alameda County, African Americans are twice as likely as Caucasians to die of COVID-19, and Blacks have the highest COVID-19 fatality rate among all ethnic groups.

The specific target audience will be Alameda County Residents 12+ with a focus on low-income people of color (specifically African Americans and Hispanics). Using multi-media content, social media, traditional media placement and a variety of interactive virtual events, the AAWP will engage the community on this drive for youth vaccinations and help us be safe and well.

The Alameda Alliance for Health, a non-profit managed care health plan committed to making high quality health care services accessible and affordable for residents of Alameda County, California, is working to reducing the spread of COVID-19 in their county.

The African American Wellness Project (AAWP) was organized to respond to health disparities in the Black community, the AAWP serves as a megaphone for trusted information that enables and encourages this population to better navigate the healthcare system, advocate for themselves, and receive improved care, regardless of insurance or circumstances.

“At AAWP we provide the information, tools and resources you need to Protect Your Health. COVID is not going away any time soon. We are all in this together and want to ensure that residents have the accurate facts and resources available to them to make informed decisions about getting vaccinated to reduce the spread and protect themselves, their families and their communities,” said AAWP Founder and long-time Bay area award-winning physician Dr. Michael LeNoir.
