Introduction: Black children are five times more likely to die from asthma than white children. Know the signs.
Welcome to Day 5 of our community health educational series brought to you by Dr. Michael Lenoir and the African American Wellness Project (AAWP). When discussing modern health challenges, few topics impact our daily quality of life as consistently—and yet remain as frequently misunderstood—as asthma warning signs.
Across Black communities nationwide, individuals and families often navigate health disparities, delayed clinical diagnoses, and environmental stressors without access to tailored, culturally relevant medical guidance. Our goal with this post is to break down the science behind asthma warning signs, eliminate common misconceptions, and equip you with practical, actionable strategies to safeguard your health and the well-being of your loved ones.
What You Need to Know: Dr. Lenoir’s Perspective
Brought to you by the African American Wellness Project.
Black children are five times more likely to die from asthma than white children. That statistic should stop all of us. Knowing the warning signs is not optional.
Watch for a cough that gets worse at night. Feeling winded doing normal things like climbing stairs. A tight feeling in the chest. Wheezing you can actually hear when someone breathes out.
The mistake I see most often is families normalizing these symptoms for months, even years, before coming in. By the time they do, asthma has been doing damage that good early treatment could have prevented.
If your child avoids running with other kids or always has to stop and catch their breath, that is not just being out of shape. Get them evaluated.
Asthma caught early is controllable. Left untreated, it becomes dangerous.

The Deeper Clinical Disparity & Environmental Factors
Why is understanding asthma warning signs particularly essential for African American health? Medical research consistently underscores that systemic factors—including housing conditions, urban environmental pollution, unequal healthcare access, and racial bias in treatment recommendations—significantly shape how health issues manifest in Black populations.
For example, when dealing with issues related to asthma warning signs, many patients experience persistent symptoms for months or even years before receiving a proper evaluation from a healthcare provider. This delay often leads to unnecessary suffering, reduced productivity, poor sleep quality, and a decreased overall quality of life. Recognizing early warning signs and advocating for thorough diagnostic testing is a vital form of self-care and community empowerment.
Practical Action Plan & Recommendations
To take control of your health and address asthma warning signs head-on, consider implementing these key daily and medical strategies:
- Proactive Symptom Tracking: Keep a daily log of your symptoms, noting when they worsen, environmental factors, diet, sleep patterns, or physical activity levels. Having concrete records helps your healthcare provider make more accurate clinical decisions.
- Environmental & Household Optimizations: Identify and reduce exposure to indoor and outdoor triggers. Simple steps like improving indoor ventilation, maintaining clean living spaces, using proper filter systems, and managing stress can substantially reduce symptom severity.
- Prepare for Medical Appointments: When visiting your doctor, come prepared with written questions. Inquire about definitive diagnostic tests, evidence-based treatment plans, potential side effects of medications, and long-term prevention strategies.
- Educate Your Family and Neighbors: Knowledge is most powerful when shared. Talk with family members, friends, and church or community groups about asthma warning signs to ensure our whole community stays vigilant and informed.
