AAWP is proud to partner with AstraZeneca to launch the 2026-2027 Asthma Impact and Education Project to close critical health gaps and help African American communities breathe easier.
African Americans experience much higher rates of emergency room visits and asthma-related deaths—often two to four times higher than national averages – due to limited access to specialized care, low awareness of symptoms, confusion around updated treatment guidelines and newer medications, difficulty finding culturally competent providers, and financial obstacles that prevent consistent management.
AAWP is proud to partner with AstraZeneca because this initiative directly addresses those barriers with culturally relevant, community-centered solutions.
Together, we will deliver practical education and tools—including a composite asthma impact assessment that evaluates both impairment and future risk—to empower individuals to better understand and manage their asthma.
Over 2026-2027, our partnership will achieve meaningful impact through the Black Doctors Speak Podcast, community screenings, a high-visibility education webinar, targeted radio and social media campaigns, and direct engagement with healthcare providers.
Our work rests on three pillars: Community Education through grassroots outreach with churches and families; Provider Education to strengthen culturally competent care; and Direct Engagement with partners like BlackDoctor.org, 100 Black Men and KBLX radio (reaching over 500,000 weekly listeners in the Bay Area).
This initiative matters because every unnecessary asthma crisis is preventable with the right information and support.
By combining AAWP’s deep community trust with AstraZeneca’s leadership in respiratory health, we can reduce disparities, improve quality of life, and ensure more African Americans receive the care they deserve.
AAWP is proud to partner with AstraZeneca in turning awareness into action—one informed breath, one empowered family, and one healthier community at a time.
